I was born June 15th 1996 at Nanaimo Regional Hospital. In 1998 my sister Ianna Folkes was born. My family spent a year in San Diego and returned home to Nanaimo when I was three. I have been in french immersion since starting in kindergarten at Ecole Pauline Haarer.
I first walked into Shima Karate School in 2002 when I was six years old. After one year in samurai training I was forced to drop all sports due to serious pneumonia. I have been training continuously at Shima since 2004. Iíve also played numerous sports through elementary school including soccer, flag football, volleyball, basketball and cross-country running. Having an interest in running I trained with my dad and the Nanaimo track and field club for several years and competed in four local 10km road races.
During the last four years Iíve participated in numerous karate tournaments including the BC Winter games in 2010. In 2011 I became an official karate regional kata and kumite judge. Just recently in February I volunteered as a referee at this years BC Winter games.
Iíve been in French immersion at Nanaimo District Secondary School since 2009 and have had straight A marks during that time. This spring I started working at Thrifty Foods, and hope to save money for my university studies. Business and economics interest me so I hope to study those areas at UBC, perhaps leading to a career in the financial industry.
Some of my proudest achievements are:
-School citizenship award winner 2009
-10km road race finisher, with a fastest time of 49 minutes.
-Best off road runner 2009 with Nanaimo track and field club.
-House soccer tournament champion, and league 2nd place finisher 2009.
-9th place in cross country at provincial championships 2009.
