O'Sensei Kim - "His Life"
Shima Karate School was registered with the Province of B.C. by Sensei Richard Marshall in 1981. Shima means “Island” in Japanese so the selection of the name was a logical one. Our logo of Vancouver Island has the rising sun of Japan behind it. The logo means Japanese Karate practiced on Vancouver Island.

  • The style of Karate practiced at the Shima Karate School is Goju Ryu, which is represented by the fist symbol.
  • Shima now has three dojos located in central Vancouver Island.
  • The Parksville dojo is the original dojo and was owned and operated by head instructor Sensei Richard Marshall.
  • This dojo closed when the City of Parksville purchased the property and forced the dojo to close.
  • The Second dojo which is now the "Hombu Dojo" is located in Nanaimo and is instructed by Sensei Kurt Nordli.
  • The third dojo is in Lantzville and is instructed by Sensei Brian Maximchuk.
  • Shima has recently reopened the dojo in Parksville, this is instructed by Sensei Adrian Clarkson.
