Sensei Brian Maximchuk, Sandan

Brian Maximchuk was born in Saskatoon Saskatchewan on March 1, 1970. Four years later he moved to Richmond B.C. where he discovered the Martial Arts.

In 1980 he began to study Tae Kwon Do under the tutelage of Yeuh Sun Choi. By the age of 15 he had earned his black belt and was assigned many of the teaching duties.

In his high school year Brian became interested in some form of full contact so he joined the Richmond Boxing Club. He trained and competed there until his graduation from the school.

In his early 20’s Maximchuk moved to Parksville on Vancouver Island. It was there he found his home in Goju Ryu Karate. Under the experience of Sensei Rick Marshall his skills were expanded and sharpened.

Realizing this young man’s potential Sensei Marshall began grooming him to run a Dojo of his own. Brian now runs Shima Martial Arts School #3, in Lantzville.

• In 1995 Brian was graded for and was awarded the rank of Shodan by the Butoku-Kai of Canada.
• In 1996 he competed in the Butoku-Kai National Karate Championships in Vancouver and earned a Silver medal in the Men’s Black Belt division
• In 1997 he was graded again and awarded the rank of Nidan.
• In March 2000 Brian graded for the rank of Sandan
• In 1998 he competed in Niagara Falls Ontario, for the second Butoku-Kai Nationals. This time he earned both silver and bronze medals in the Nidan and up division.

Brian presently teaches traditional Goju Ryu Karate in Lantzville.

He also conducts self-defense seminars in the mid Vancouver Island region.

He lives in North Nanaimo with his wife and two children
